A Word About the Weekend

Here's a quick "word about the weekend" from our Pastor.

weekend

SUNDAY, FEBRUARY 28th

Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven. Matthew 5:3

I am super excited about our Journey through the words of Jesus in Matthew 5 most often called, "The Beatitudes".

This weekend, we will explore Matthew 5:3... "Blessed are the poor in spirit"... What does it mean to be “poor in spirit?” . Poverty and blessing don't seem to go together. We don't think of someone being poor and being blessed at the same time... But what if there is a deeper significance, a sense of spiritual poverty.

Spiritually empty is what it means to be “poor in spirit.” We often get tripped up on the word “poor” because we so quickly associate it with material lack. But in Scripture, including in the Old Testament, poor does not necessarily mean physical poverty. It is often a technical term for those who realize that, at bottom, they need God for everything physical and spiritual. This is what Isaiah meant when he proclaimed, “The Spirit of the Lord God is upon me, because the Lord has anointed me to bring good news to the poor” (Isaiah 61:1)This background makes clear that it is the Messiah who will supply the needs of the “poor.”

See you Sunday!
